TCC Troll on the Left

Had a great weekend. I just barely made it into Chicago before a big snow storm hit…we tried to land three times before the pilot could see enough to put the plane on the ground. Thursday was spent on campus at Trinity Christian College (TCC) for an alumni event, Friday was day long meetings for the Alumni Association Board of Directors and then a banquet that night for the Alumni of the Year awards. Saturday was breakfast with a great friend, Jeremy Junkin and then hanging out all day with Doug and Kim (with whom I was staying) , Keith who flew up from Ft. Lauderdale (and waited a good 45 minutes to complain about the weather), Brian and Matt. Good times (and deep dish pizza) were had by all. Continue reading TCC on ESPN

The Kite Runner

The KiterunnerI finally got around to reading The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini a few weeks back. It had been sitting on my shelf for several months–a few of them while I plugged through Don Quixote. I picked it up on a whim one evening in a bookstore…it was on sale pretty cheap, I’d heard someone mention it to me before, and it was a NY Times Bestseller. I read it in two days. What a week!

What a morning. I’m sitting in the Nashville airport waiting to catch a plane to Chicago. Already it’s been a stressful day, and it’s only 10:00. Renee and Jonathan left for Florida yesterday and I spent the rest of the day getting all of the stuff I done I needed to for work. But, as is prone to happen when I’m living the bachelor lifestyle, I procrastinated a bit and went to bed way too late. Then I must have turned my alarm off without waking up and ended up oversleeping by a half hour and had to scramble to get everything ready so I could catch the shuttle to Nashville. But I was on the road only 5 minutes later than I had planned and was feeling good…until I looked over at the passenger seat and saw the files I was supposed to drop off at the office before I left. And I was already down the mountain. Yeah, I cursed. Everything is fine now, though, so here I wait. Continue reading What a week!

Updated Subscribe2 Widget

I’ve done a bit of minor tweaking to the Subscribe2 Widget-Hack–I really only changed some display problems, the main widget works just the same. The big news is that I finally figured out how to use the SVN repository at wordpress.org/extend/plugins. It’s just a big fancy way of keeping track of the different versions and it allows you to take advantage of the upgrade notification introduced in WordPress 2.3. Anyway, the newest version of the Subscribe2 Widget-Hack (1.2.1) is available here. Let me know if there are any questions.

Overheard

Jonathan turns three on Tuesday. We’re pretty excited for it and he’s having a party Monday afternoon with a Thomas the Tank Engine cake and some friends from the college. Anyway, as I’m sure you’re aware, two year olds can say some pretty funny things out of the blue. Take last night for instance. We were on our way back from Sticky Fingers and were heading up the mountain telling him it was going to be time to go to bed. He informed us he would prefer to watch a movie and I was insisting that it was, in fact, time to go to bed. After a few times back and forth, he responded:

“I want to watch a movie right now, Daddy. Do you want to sit in the naughty spot? You don’t want to do that.”

Jonathan has apparently heard several variations of this phrase recently, and tried to see if they worked the same on Daddy as they did on him.

A few more of our favorites from the past few months:

While sitting on the potty, taking his time…

Daddy: “What are you doing Jonathan?”

Jonathan: “Just looking at my penis.”

When we told him he was going to have a cake for his birthday…

Mommy: “You’re going to have a Thomas cake for your birthday!”

Jonathan: “That will be AMAZING Mommy!”

And during Christmas season when we would read the story of Jesus’ birth every night…

Jonathan: “I want Baby Brother to come now.”

Mommy: “Baby Brother needs to get bigger now. What do you want Baby Brother’s name to be?”

Jonathan: “Baby Jesus.”

We’re pretty sure it’s not heretical if it comes from a two-year old.

An Ice Day

It took 45 minutes to bring Jonathan to his preschool this morning–even though it’s only a couple of miles down the road. We had some freezing rain come over the mountain last night and this morning, making the roads and sidewalks slick and dangerous. There was an accident right out in front of Covenant (hence the delay in getting down the road), and after delaying classes two hours, the administration decided to cancel classes today. Covenant is located right on top of Lookout Mountain, and several faculty and staff members live down the mountain in the Chattanooga area, making the drive up on icy roads quite dangerous. So, meetings are canceled and we may catch up on some movies. Continue reading An Ice Day

A First…Unfortunately

Well, it finally happened. Jonathan has his first ear infection. Not bad for a kid who will be three in two weeks. He and I have been battling a cold since we returned from our Christmas vacation and were thought to be on the mend. About a week ago, though, Jonathan began waking up in the middle of the night crying for Daddy. At first it was once or twice a night, then it seemed like it was every two hours or so. Then on Tuesday night he–and I–was up 6 or 7 times. He did say his ear hurt, so off to the Doctor he and Renee went on Wednesday morning. Sure enough, ear infection. Since he’s been on the drugs he’s been back to his happy-go-lucky self, and all three of us had an uninterrupted night of sleep last night. Continue reading A First…Unfortunately

Slaying a Giant

Last spring I needed a new book to read over Spring Break. We were heading down to Florida to visit Renee’s folks (and Jack!) and I planned on doing little else but running and relaxing in the sun. I decided to finally get around to reading Les Miserables by Victor Hugo. It had long been my favorite musical, ever since we saw it in Chicago on our Annual Chicago Weekend with the Roehrigs. I then saw it on Broadway on our high school senior class trip and again in Chicago with Renee, Doug and whoever had a crush on Doug at that time in college. I plowed through unabridged version that week of vacation. It was amazing how much more back-story there is to what happens in the musical. Anyway, I was hooked on the Classics. Happy New Year!

Our Midwest Christmas tour is over, we’re back to the mountain in Georgia, and except for the occasional outbursts and singing of an almost-three-year-old, the college is quiet. Students don’t return until the 4th and classes resume on the 8th.

Except for the Packers losing to the Bears (and indirectly causing me to lose my Fantasy Football Championship to Renee’s brother, Jon), we had quite the enjoyable visit home. It was the first time we had been home over the holidays since we have been married and it was refreshing to be with family and friends, and, yes, even enjoy the cold and snow.
